Responsible Ownership

Domestic animals require constant care and supervision, just like children. Responsible pet owners readily recognize this need and see to it that their pets are cared for and are protected in a humane manner.

Unfortunately, some pet owners neither comprehend nor want to assume the responsibility of owning a pet. A great number of these animals are abandoned and left to seek food and shelter for themselves. As a result, we find dogs and cats roaming the streets, trespassing on private property, and creating traffic hazards. This creates another dilemma-pet overpopulation.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, in six years, one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies. What’s most shocking is that in seven years, one cat and her young can produce 420,000 kittens. Pet overpopulation is preventable and the solution is simple-have your pets spayed/neutered.

Here are some steps on how to become a responsible pet owner:

  • Select the right pet. Before choosing a pet, consider your lifestyle. Selecting the wrong pet and can make both you and your new pet unhappy.
  • Spay/Neuter your pet. Having your pet spayed/neutered is both beneficial to you and your pet. It prevents unwanted pets; reduces your pets’ chances from developing cancer and other diseases.
  • Make sure your pet has proper identification. This is the most common reason why pets and their owner’s aren’t reunited.

And above all, love your pet unconditionally.
