TEEN KILLED IN GAZEBO WAY SHOOTING

On Friday, July 7, 2023 at 9:41 p.m., Columbus Police Officers responded to the 1200 block of Gazebo Way (Arbor Pointe Apartments) concerning a shooting. Responding officers discovered a Black male (later identified as Bobby Lyons, 17) suffering from gunshot wounds. Lyons was transported by EMS to Piedmont Columbus Regional.

Man Killed in Hotel Shooting, Suspect Arrested

 Friday, July 7, 2023

On Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 8:58 p.m., members of the Columbus Police Department’s Patrol Unit were dispatched to the 3000 block of Victory Drive (Motel 6) in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found James Mitchell, 47 lying on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Mitchell was transported by EMS to Piedmont Columbus Regional where he succumbed to his injuries. A 19-year-old was arrested in connection to Mitchell's death.

CPD Teams Up with Multiple Agencies for “Operation Honey Badger”

The Columbus Police Department’s Special Operations Unit organized and conducted “Operation Honey Badger.” The operation was comprised of 8 details during the month of June. During that period, Columbus Police officers and members from partner agencies saturated the four most violent zones in the city to locate and arrest individuals in possession of illegal firearms.

Man Sentenced for Aggravated Child Molestation

In January 2021, investigators with the Columbus Police Department began looking into a delayed report of child sexual abuse against a victim who was 11 years old when the crimes occurred. During a recorded interview with investigators, Derrick Tyson, 44, confessed to the reported abuse.

MAN KILLED IN WEDGEFIELD COURT SHOOTING

On Thursday, June 15, 2023 around 9:10 p.m., Columbus Police officers responded to the 2500 block of Wedgefield Court in reference to a shooting. Responding officers found a deceased male (later identified as Deyon Wade, 22) lying in the road with a gunshot wound.

Columbus Police Department Receives $1.65 Million Grant

The Columbus Police Department is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $1.65 million through the “Public Safety and Community Violence Reduction Grant.” Governor Brian Kemp made the announcement Thursday. The funds are part of 118 preliminary grant awards totaling more than $83.5 million statewide.

MAN CONVICTED OF CHILD MOLESTATION, SENTENCED TO 60 YEARS IN PRISON

In November 2021, investigators with the Columbus Police Department began looking into reports of child sexual abuse involving two children, ages 10 and 11. Probable cause was established to charge Carl Creech, 31, with three counts of Child Molestation.
