Open Burning
Sec. 13-167.6. - Open burning prohibited; exceptions.
No person shall cause, allow, or permit the open burning of any material including, but not limited to, garbage, junk, leaves, rubbish/trash, construction, or demolition waste within Columbus, Georgia, except for the following reasons:
(a) Recreational purposes or for cooking food for immediate human consumption;
(b) Operation of devices using an open flame including, but not limited to, tar kettles, blow torches, welding torches, and portable heaters, and air curtain destructors;
(c) Fires set for the purpose of training public fire-fighting personnel when authorized by the appropriate government entity and the guidelines set forth by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are strictly observed;
(d) Open burning shall be permitted on construction sites or for land clearing activities if an approved air curtain destructor as defined by the department of natural resources is used, and is in compliance with their regulations for use of said equipment. Prior to operating said device, a permit must be obtained from the Columbus Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division;(e)
In addition to meeting the above provisions, open burning allowed under this section shall comply with the rules and regulations set forth by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, "Rules and Regulations for Solid Waste Management" and "Rules and Regulations of Air Quality Control."
