Floods

A flood, as defined by the National Flood Insurance Program, is a general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land area or of two or more properties (at least one of which is your property) from: Overflow of inland or tidal waters, unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source.

How Can I Be Prepared for Floods?

  1. Visit Ready.gov and print out an Emergency Supply Kit checklist. This checklist will provide you with a selection of survival items to have on hand during emergency situations, including non-perishable food, water, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra flashlights and batteries.
  2. Never drive through flooded roads; evacuate a vehicle that is stalled in a flood area.
  3. Make a Family Emergency Plan.
  4. Property insurance does not typically cover flood damage. Talk to your insurance provider about your policy and consider if you need additional coverage.
  5. Take a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class from your local Citizen Corps chapter. Keep your training current.
